Student Dress codes

As young adults in today's fast paced, ever-changing society it is easy to get caught up in the question of what is right and what is "cool."

Most of the time when kids hear the term "dress code" they seem somehow programmed to think "Un-cool", therefore it won't be tolerated. These are the same kids who will argue that a formal code of dress or uniform suppresses one's personal individuality, state that a uniform is too expensive for them to afford or that it just plain unfair.

These arguments are statements usually made with little or no thought and very little support to back them up.

I ask you, as students, as young adults with minds of your own not to make a judgment with no thought. I ask you to listen to think and to see how a unified code of dress can benefit us all.

First of all school should not be a fashion show. Students should know and be able to recognize the difference between what is appropriate and inappropriate attire in different social settings.

Throughout life there are rules and regulated codes of dress. You yourself have no doubt already encountered some of these cases. For example, wearing a sports uniform, special dress for dance, for gymnastics, dinners, church etc. Certainly for a job you must wear certain attire that conforms to company policy. You can't walk into an interview and state you will not wear the uniform because you think it's stupid looking. So why should school be any different? A simple dress code can help prepare you for the real world ahead.

Teenagers wanting to gain respect and the responsibilities of an adult should first start acting like one. As kids prepare for real life they should be less concerned with what clothes they are wearing and more focused on receiving a solid education. Dress codes present the school and you in a formal respectable way, and respect is the harbinger of success. Remember, "Dress Codes are the Best Codes."
