Prison

In this past decade the number of people put into prisons have risen higher then any other decade in the past, and with that the number of prisons has to increase to accommodate the number of prisoners. In the year 2000 the number of prisoners in Maryland will reach over 22.751. To keep a single prisoner in prison it cost $21,460.00 a year. Maryland has budget of $481,221,593.00 to spends on it¯s prisons, which is less compared to most others states. Even with that amount of money used for prisons in Maryland, inmates that have money in their institutional account, and does not have financial obligations such as child support, restitution, fines, fees, or sanctions they are required to pay toward their incarceration costs. For any juvenile in a correction facility still has to pay for his or her costs. The parents of the juvenile are required to pay for his or hers medical, dental, psychological and optometric services.

When I hear the amount of money used for prisons I think °is that large sum of money a necessity?± After viewing the statistics that that one forth of the United States population is in prisons I see that my thoughts for that amount of money changes. The government uses billions of doll

In the prison, there are inmates that are allowed to work to receive money for their efforts. The pay of the inmates varies from jobs to jobs that are offered in the prison. Most inmates are paid under minimum wage and go up to or above minimum wage. If they put money into their intuitional accounts they are made to pay for some of their incarceration expenses. The rest of the money they earn while they are in prison is up to them how to spend.

Universities were dropping by 5%. If this funding shift were allowed to continue at this rate, the state would be spending more for prisons than for the entire University System of Maryland by the year 2001, even though, in the year 1990, the state was spending twice as much on its universities as its prisons.

ars for educating that three fourths of the population that are out in the streets, yet they don¯t even use one fourth of those billions of dollars to educate the inmates in prison or jail. Even though there is such a small amount of money compared to the money spent on the rest of the population, most people believe that using so much money on inmates is a waste of money and think the fund used for prisons should be reallocated to different more productive tasks. Even though prisons are being always made there is a very large demand for a large increase in a number of them. Most prisons are over crowded and not sanitary.

The cost to maintain an operating prison is very high also. The expenses that are needed to be covered to maintain the prison are food, staff, health care, programming, and education. For each day an inmate uses $6.54 for medical care, $3.28 for inmate programs, $2.96 for food, $1.81 for utilities, and $.52 for transportation/travel. A single inmate spends up to an average of $60.95 each day. The approximation of the expenses used to maintain a prison annually is about $235,564, but that isn¯t too much for the staff that means. There are approximately 7,302 employees at the prison. Knowing that you receive that small amount of pay and working in a place where you risk your life each day, I would never want to work there in my life. Seeing people such as those that are not recog
