In this past decade the number of people put into prisons have risen higher then any other decade in the past, and with that the number of prisons has to increase to accommodate the number of prisoners. In the year 2000 the number of prisoners in Maryland will reach over 22.751. To keep a single prisoner in prison it cost $21,460.00 a year. Maryland has budget of $481,221,593.00 to spends on it¡¯s prisons, which is less compared to most others states. Even with that amount of money used for prisons in Maryland, inmates that have money in their institutional account, and does not have financial obligations such as child support, restitution, fines, fees, or sanctions they are required to pay toward their incarceration costs. For any juvenile in a correction facility still has to pay for his or her costs. The parents of the juvenile are required to pay for his or hers medical, dental, psychological and optometric services.
