Breaking Boundaries with Music

"So-called facts are fraud they want us to allege and pledge and bow down to their God lost culture, the culture loss spun our minds and through time ignorance has taken over; we gotta take the power back, bam! Here's the plan, mother fuck'n Uncle Sam; step back, I know who I am. Raise up your ear, I'll drop the style and clear it's the beats and lyrics they fear. The rage is relentless. We need a movement with a quickness. You are the witness of change and to counteract we gotta take the power back." These lyrics from Rage Against the Machine are one of the very best examples of breaking boundaries using words. This is an outcry of anarchy trying to tell people how they feel about the government. Boundaries in the music community are broken every day and every time an artist writes lyrics; sometimes you just have to listen a little harder. Every band has a point to put across to their listeners and they do so by breaking boundaries with words.

The Beatles, one of histories greatest rock bands, were prolific at breaking boundaries. Their music was some of the most influential ever written. Every song that they sang was about feelings that they were having or had in the past. At first their

music was loved by teenagers and hated by parents. One moment everybody loved them, then John Lennon says, "We are bigger than Jesus" and then there are bonfires completely made up of Beatles' albums. Even after all that, the Beatles are still one of the world's most popular bands. That is an example of breaking boundaries at its best. Then on top of all that, some of their later work was very influenced by drug use and people knew it was but didn't care because they liked the message they were receiving from the band. In the song title, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, each capitalized letter spells out LSD. The lyrics, "Picture yourself in boat in a river with tangerine trees and marmalade skies," from the same shows an example of a boundary being broke by a band that just put a song about their perspective on how they see their lives and world when they are inebriated.

Rap music has had an extremely hard time breaking boundaries due to all the negative publicity received. Another reason for the rappers having trouble breaking through is that they had no roots in music. Rap was just started up in the early 1980's. The rap community wants to send so many messages it is unreal. Many of them are stomped into the ground by a collation of angry parents that say the music is warping the mind of their child. They have overcome this by keep going no matter what anybody says and making their music more vulgar than ever. Snoop Doggy Dog is having one of the hardest times trying to get a point across. Just like with other types of music there is a meaning; you just to have to be open to receive the ideas expressed in the lyrics. So many of his songs and his own personal life have been attacked time and time again. Maybe his goal is to just show that he can say what ever he wants to say. Another example and probably the best proof of this has to be Eminem. All of his lyrics have been criticized and ridiculed. His mother even took him to court for the lyrics of his song saying that she was a drug user. When his first album came out everybody that did not listen to it was furious with songs that talked about doing drugs and talking bad about his mom. The funny part about that is that it was a true story and he was just trying to get out his feelings and teach people a lesson or two. Every song he writes and raps has a point. It is just there behind the vulgar language he uses. The only reason that he raps the way that he does is because that is all he knows.
