a historic museum
The Greensboro Historical Museum is located downtown Greensboro in a building dating back to the turn of the century (1892). The Museum was not founded until 1924. The permanent collection of the museum includes costumes, toys, textiles, decorative arts, and militaria. The Greensboro Historical Museum reflects the local history of Piedmont North Carolina. It also reflects the history of the American Civil War. I decided to go and visit Greensboro Historical Museum because I thought it was a place in which I could learn some more about American history. Before getting there I had a picture on my mind of what the museum was going to look like and the exhibits I was expecting to see. But it turned out to be a completely different thing from the preconception I had. The turn out was not bad just different from my expectations. When I got there a very charming old lady greeted me to the museum. She did not hesitate to ask me where I was from. She made some suggestions of what kind of path I should follow in the museum. I asked her if there were any guides but to my surprise there were no guides and no tape recorders available either. So I followed her instructions on whe
This floor also had an exhibit that consisted of belongings from Mendenhall-Simpson. Most of the things displayed on that exhibit are originals. Some of the originals have been redesigned. These two people had an important role in Guilford's county political and educational history during 1800 to 1850. Some other exhibits in this floor related to North Carolina are "Piedmont Furniture" (Thomas Day pieces), "From Forest to City" (Greensboro), and" Short Story Author O. Henry. Then I tried to go to the third floor or what the museum calls the Top floor. I said I tried cause it took me a while to find the stairs that would eventually lead me to the floor. There were couple of stairwells that were closed and the signalization was not good. re to go first. I went to the second floor, which exhibits a lot of the history of the Piedmont specially Greensboro and other collections. One of the first things that really called my attention was "The Metcalf-Cooke Collection." This is a 35-piece collection of coin silver holloware that was originally purchased by Mr. Thomas S. Metcalf. This guy became a successful cotton merchant. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island but relocated to Augusta, Georgia. This collection was ordered from the Gorham & Thurber Co. Along with the bill of sale and correspondence, notes survive describing the maker's intent and use of decorative elements. For Example, the "Water Kettle" is considered "the grand piece of the set...." Some other pieces of silver that forms this collection are: "Card Receiver", "Butter Cooler", "Cake Basket", "Covered Vegetable Dish", etc. All of this pieces are nice and it is amazing how well they are conserved. As I said first thing that really catch my eye in t
