A detailed Summary of A Good Man is Hard to Find

"A Good Man is Hard to Find" is grotesque tale of evil epitomized through two very different characters, yet are surprisingly similar. When one thinks of a grandmother, the words, "dear and old" come to mind. So normally, one would naturally expect the grandmother to represent a pure goodness and a serial killer, on the other hand is precisely the opposite in this case. Similarly, one would expect the old woman to depict life and the Misfit death, yet again in this story it portrays the opposite. But most importantly the both represent two depictions of evil. "A Good Man is Hard to Find" exemplifies through this traveling narrative that life without a spirituality is a living death, but ironically it is through her serendipic meeting with the Misfit, even though it is fatal, she finds salvation through her own spiritual epiphany. In Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find" the two portrayals of evil are symbolized through grandmother and the Misfit.

The Misfit remarks to himself and adequately, unknowingly summates the moral of the story and the portrayals of evil and sin when he says, "one might as well enjoy mutes you got left by killing someone or burning down his house or doing some other sort of meaness to them." In reveling statement, he succintly states that if one is not willing to accept God then or she might as well throw propriety to the winds and go out become a serial killer. This grotesque exaggeration contains a profound and simple truth that to reject and deny God's unconditional love in small ways like the Grandmother does, is just as sinful as rejecting his love in big ways as represented through the Misfit. This story exemplifies the truth that without God there is no value system. However the Misfit and Grandmother are difference lies in the fact that the Grandmother finds her salvation and the Misfit will never find his.

The evils in our society relate to this story because the denial of God is epidemically everywhere. It is this lack of God in our lives, and misinterpretation of what God represents that creates a evil environment. There are many small and large sins in society. The worst sin our society is premeditated murder, but being an accomplice to murder or allowing to happen through omission is just as wrong as doing the action.
