The first woman to take on more stereotypically masculine attributes is Lena Grove once she furthers her journey with Armstid. Armstid comes to believe that she abandoned womanhood due to the shuns of the female community while the men took pity and helped the burdened girl. This view presents a realization and recognition of the female species by Faulkner. In several of his other works the women are portrayed as simple servants or lush debutantes with little virtue. This quote was said by Hightower who, lost in his unfounded Civil War fantasies, has completely forfeited life.
