computer crime

The computer and the Internet have become important tools used in the lives of many all around the world. Traditionally the computer and the Internet are used as an information tool, although it is beginning to be used for unlawful activities, such as a way to distribute child pornography, as a means to corrupt the infrastructure of a business and money laundering. Hackers are a group of individuals who are learners and explorers, using their talents to cause damage to a society. Most of the information gathered by hackers is available to anyone with the right tools and the know-how. The majority of these conflicts surround the idea of what should be made available on the Internet and what security measures are being used by targeted organizations. The minimal security of information on the Internet has enabled hackers to access information and use it to destroy corporations, government agencies, and society, in general.

In this essay I plan to discuss computer crime and hackers, how to protect your computer, and what security measures have been taking place to prevent computer crime. I will look closely at the following questions: what is computer crime, what is hacking, t

3.4 So Are Hackers/Crackers Criminals?

3.6 What Security Measures Do We Use Against Hacking?

Even though there are an enormous amount of computer crimes, they usually fall within one of the five major categories. They are sabotage or wreckage, theft of services, theft of data, software, or hardware, distribution of illegal materials (particularly child pornography) and financial crimes or fraudulent crimes (http://www2.utmb.edu). Each are discussed more in depth below.

Fraudulent claims that are used to drive stocks up to increase profits are beginning to be the most popular financial crime. The claims are usually posted on a message board primarily targeted to potential investors. The claims generally cause the investor to be enticed to purchase the stock, as it is "good buy" or it is under valued. Recently, Jonathan Lebed, a 15 year old, managed to drive stocks up with a "bogus chat-room hype that enabled him to capture illegal profits" (Kadlec, 10-02-2000). Producing fraudulent information to gain illegal profits from stocks is relatively easy to do, but the SEC has been able to crack 180 Net-fraud cases within the past five years (Kadlec, 10-02-2000).

The FBI has made several task forces to deal with the issues of computer crime, particularly those of fraudulent crimes and child pornography. It is reassuring to know that action is being taken to decrease the amount of computer crime in the US. The FBI has stopped many individuals in the act of committing the crime, but we know need to work on the other side. Computer security should be increased and Internet activity should be monitored for suspicious activities. With more effort into crime prevention, in the next decade, computer crime might not be an issue.
