Snowboarding...
Until the mid 1980's, snowboarding was basically unheard of at major ski resorts and therefore it was not allowed. Because it was an unknown sport that which only a handful of people understood, there was much fear and concern on the part of traditional skiers, resulting in an alarming conflict between both sides. As many of the very first snowboarders will recall, even the sports name was often changed by people who did not know what it was, sometimes to become names like ski-boarding, mono-boarding, board-skiing, and no doubt there have been many others. One of the reasons that snowboarding was not accepted for many years as a sport was that it was considered a “fad”, similar to skateboarding in that it would not last as a sport popular with the “higher classes”. When something “different” comes along and challenges the existence of a major sport such as skiing, there is bound to be a conflict. So what makes snowboarding so different?
