The Big Journey

A detailed Summary of The Big Journey

It was the year 2056, Jonathan Burke, Sam Hiltz and I (Chris Landry) were setting up to go on the greatest expedition in the history of the world. We were going to travel to the centre of the earth. We had attempted the same thing about four year's back, but due to some unfortunate incidences the expedition was postponed until another time. We had to find a new company to grant us some money, because the one that had originally planed to give us two million dollars backed out. Luckily we did just that, and now here we are today in good old Nova Scotia preparing ourselves for a week of excitement and adventure.

I had just finished packing everything in the car when I got a call from Jonathan, he said that the plane was waiting at the airport for me and we would be leaving in about twenty-five minutes. I told him that I was going to be a little late because I had to pick up Sam on the way. Forty-five minutes later I pulled up in Sam's driveway, not a good way to start the trip. Sam was sitting there patiently with his arms folded across his chest.

"Hey Chris, where were you buddy, you're late." He said with a little smirk on his face.

When we finally got to the airport, it was about an hour since Jonathan had called, he wasn't very impressed. We were now about thirty minutes behind schedule and Jonathan didn't like that one bit. We got everything into the plane and were ready for the six-hour trip to Hawaii.

Then we came to the outer core, it is extremely hot, and is made up of molten iron and nickel. This layer is about 2,300km deep, and its temperature is 2,000 to 5,000 C.

The next part that we came to was the lower part of the Mantle, it is a liquid, but a very thick one so we had to use our drill to get through it, the deeper down we got, the hotter it got the mantle went down about 2,820km.

The first layer that we went through was the rigid upper Mantle it was about 1,600 C it was about 1,000km thick.

"Ready as I'll ever be." He replied

The last layer that we came to was the inner core it is a sphere of 2,400km. It is made up of mainly iron rock, that is three times the density of the crust and is heated over 3,800 C. Extreme pressure keeps it as a solid.

We collected samples from each layer that we passed through, and when we got back to the surface we told every
