Acid rain is a result of gas that dissolves in the rainwater. It can be found the

form of rain, snow, fog or dust. Acid rain has been on the increase ever since the

industrial revolution and has really become evident in recent decades. 70 percent of acid

rain comes from SO2 that dissolves into the water to form sulphuric acid. The other 30

percent comes various oxides of nitrogen, mainly NO2 and NO3, as a group called NOx.

More than 90 percent of the sulphur and 95 percent of the nitrogen emissions occurring in

eastern North America are of human origin. These pollutants arise from the use of coal

in the production of electricity, from base metal smelting, and from fuel combustion in

vehicles. They can be also converted chemically into such secondary pollutants as nitric

acid and sulphuric acid, both which dissolve easily in water.

Sulphur dioxide is a byproduct of industrial processes and burning of fossil fuels.

The main contributors of SO2 are coal fired generators, and natural gas processing. 61

percent of Canada’s emissions come directly from industrial sources, while 66 percent if
