Civil Disobedience

Rules and laws regulate our society. These guidelines set forth the boundaries that American people can live and carry on their lives without disrupting the social norms. Rules are created to keep everything fair and equal for all people. Laws serve to eliminate arguments that may arise about the proportion of any agenda. Civil disobedience is the want or demand for change by rising up against societies laws, rules or norms, and accepting the fate and penalties that one may receive after his actions are carried out. Civil disobedience serves as an essential player in the functioning of democracy. To remove civil disobedience from our curriculum is like removing the keystone from the foundation of a building.

The world is constantly evolving around us. Exploration and technology paved the way for mankind into the twenty first century in the wake of new laws and norms. Civil disobedience is history, both present day and future. Our children learn history throughout their careers as students. If we are not willing to teach civil disobedi


ence, we will have to cut the entire history program out of a student education. Martin Luther King Jr., Ghandi and Plato are all prime examples of people willing to rise up against a law or social norm, in order to make their point heard.

Civil disobedience encompasses so many aspects of our everyday life. The rules and laws of our homes, schools, towns, state, and country guide our lives. Civil disobedience is a fundamental building block of our society. The children of today need to be taught about the struggles of the past. We live in a world with so many freedoms that people fought long, hard battles to obtain. They forged on against the social norms and laws of society for their cause. Civil disobedience fosters change; therefore, it will bear a permanent place in our society. Because of its importance, it should remain part of our curriculum.
