Norma Jean Moffit & Sammy

At a glance, there would seem to be little in common between the stories of Shiloh and A & P but, to look closer there can be many similarities between two major characters. The characters Norma Jean Moffitt and Sammy are both bored with life as they know it and have ambitions to make a change, but living in small towns, where families play a large roll in life, breaking out is difficult. They both have repressed feelings that they have struggled with for a while and those feelings finally surface in the end.

In a small town, it seems that every move a person makes is known by all and because of this little around town ever changes. These feeling are illustrated in A & P when Sammy says, "there's people in this town haven't seen the ocean in twenty years". Shiloh also mentions this when it says the population has only changed by 700 in twenty years. This shows how life in smaller towns is a little slower and

Both are becoming extremely bored with the current lives they are leading. Sammy refers to how the towns people are all sheep. This comparison makes all the members of the community out to being easily lead and mindless with no imagination. In Shiloh, Norma Jean's boredom is exposed when they finally make their trip to the battleground. She drives aimlessly through the park, past bluffs and trails and deep ravines. She is showing her boredom by not paying any attention to the scenery and history around her.

Norma jean and Sammy both have new ambitions in life now. In Shiloh, she is taking classes and working out. She says that she feels eighteen again and wants an opportunity to start her life over. Sammy also sees his life changing at the end of A & P he says, "my stomach kinda fell as I felt how hard the world was going to be hereafter". He realizes that the decisions he is making will totally change his life forever. Both Sammy and Norm
