What is it? Who knows. But that's what it is all about. You see, snowboarding means different things to different people. This sport has effected and changed so many lives in unique ways. The industry has changed also, with the present day height of the snowboarding industry there is a fine line between riding for love and riding for money. With the love of snowboarding comes a drive to be out on the snow, a special brotherhood that is bonded tighter than any frat house, and through the mountain top experiences one develops personal visions' of the soul of snowboarding. However, when one steps into the economic side it is easy to loose focus on what the sport is all about. So lets take a look inside the world of snowboarding and see if we can find more soul than sell-outs. Gone Pro? Well getting paid to play is essentially what these people do. Still there are evil, mainstream sell-out elements that undermine this. Love comes before money, to be great one has to love the art of snowboarding. In turn, being great means you could get paid, however, one must keep in mind that money is the root of all evil. When a boarder stops riding for love and starts riding for the corporate chec
k he/she is a sell-out, in other words souled-out. It's great to get paid to do what you love, but don't let big business, contest, and the media cloud your reason for being on the mountain. With being on the snow, whether it be good or bad, a liftline brother hood can be found, which is a group of friends to share runs with during the day and drinks with at night. Being able to share your love of the sport with people equally passionate about snowboarding gets me stoked. When your riding with a bunch of friends, in a line charging hard down a slope, or at the park together in your pack, or even poaching the local golf coarse after a snow are some of the funnest times I have experienced. I have a few close friends, not only snowboarders, that would go the extra mile for me and me the same for them. Real friends are important, and few and far between; if your lucky you will have two or three that stick with you throughout life. There are many different aspects of snowboarding, which all bring a list of reasons for being out on the mountain. Yet something is shared from peak to peak and coast to coast: the endeavor to experience. Each has a drive that brings us to the hill and I imagine that drive is no different for a kid sliding on slush in Virginia than for diehard standing in a rainy Canadian liftline.
