All things do not come with se

Every person wants a second chance to do something right. In one of his short stories, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," Ambrose Bierce reveals the need to focus on family because second chances seldom come. In this story, the point of view lets the reader comprehend a hanging victim's thoughts, imagery lets the reader endure what the character is suffering, and foreshadowing lets the reader know the plot in advance.

What is point of view? Point of view is the voice of the story. There are different kinds of point of view. Third person omniscient point of view is when the narrator has all knowledge of what is going on in the character's heads, and full knowledge of what is happening to them. The reader knows "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is third person when it seems like another person is describing the setting of the bridge in the first part of the story. The reader can tell that this story is told in third person omniscient because the reader knows what Peyton Farquhar is thinking as he is waiting to be hung. When he becomes aware of the river "a piece of dancing driftwood caught his attention and he noticed... how slowly it appeared to move." From this, the reader knows that Farquhar was feeling anxious. The

The author used point of view, imagery, and foreshadowing, to allow the reader to think and feel like Payton Farquhar the person, instead of Peyton Farquhar the character. The use of these elements also allows the reader to understand how Peyton felt about his family, and how he wished he could have gone back and had a second chance. Would the reader be able to leave everything behind without any regrets?

Foreshadowing is telling the reader what will happen to the character through small, seemingly insignificant, details that the reader often overlooks. When Peyton Farquhar fell through the bridge, he fell "as one already dead." (18). This tells the reader that he must have died as he fell from the bridge. After Peyton was free of the bridge he fell into the river and successfully, and painfully, got the noose off from around his neck, but "the undoing of the noose had been succeeded by the direst pang that he had yet experienced." (19). This excerpt tells the reader that Peyton's neck is hurting because of the noose. This piece of information makes the reader wonder if Peyton's neck is broken. When Peyton is swinging "like a pendulum"(18), the reader can assume that he is swinging from side to side from the noose around
