1984 and Brave New Worldld

Brave New World and 1984 are both literary works that describe governing bodies who exercise complete control over their societies, the differences lie in the ways they control the people and the reason's they do so.

The people of Brave New World are controlled from the begining. "Huxely's world is run by a few World Controllers who create...the world's population" (Waitt 1). These controllers have "taken the pain of life's ambiguities and indecisions upon [their] own shoulders in order to spare those less capable from having to endure such emotional and physcological presure." The people are made in the Hatcheries and Conditioning Centres, it is here that they are prepared to spend the rest of their lives as "square pegs in square holes" and "round pegs in round holes" (Waitt 1). This control is achieved in two ways: (1) oxygen deprevation; the less oxygen, the less intelligence and the less physically developed the person is, and (2) hypnopaedia, or sleep conditioning; phrases drilled over and over into the minds of the children as they sleep. (Waitt 1) "The net result of this conditioning is a society that is totally and deliberately infantile. All activities are transitory, trivial, and mindless--promiscuity replaces

Both of these works show methods of controlling a society, whether it is from limiting a persons thoughts or giving a society what they feel is happiness. And the contrast of reasoning behind why a group should stay in power is there and seems to be different yet taking the stress and decisions and brudens off the people takes away the very essence of what makes them human, as does limiting a person's creativity and thought. Thus these two ruling powers are no longer governing humans, in fact they are no longer human themselves.

In 1984 the method of control is limiting thought and eliminating the past. The control of the past is a very important element in The Party's quest for power. "Simply put, Orwell boldly claims that 'History is written by the winners.'" (Epps 2) This is the sole purpose of the Ministry of Truth in 1984, to control the past and make it look as if the party has always been right. "Thought control is executed through the falsification of history." (Glover 4512) The ultimate goal of The Party is to completely control the thoughts of everyone to ensure that they will maintain in power. The greatest way that they are able to limit thoughts is by limiting the language of the people, and "Newspeak...does precisely that: it facilitates deception and manipulation, and its purpose is to restrict understanding of the real world." (Berkes 1)

passion, immediate sensory stimulation (feelies) replaces art,
