1984 and Brave New Worldld
Brave New World and 1984 are both literary works that describe governing bodies who exercise complete control over their societies, the differences lie in the ways they control the people and the reason’s they do so. The people of Brave New World are controlled from the begining. “Huxely’s world is run by a few World Controllers who create...the world’s population” (Waitt 1). These controllers have “taken the pain of life’s ambiguities and indecisions upon [their] own shoulders in order to spare those less capable from having to endure such emotional and physcological presure.” The people are made in the Hatcheries and Conditioning Centres, it is here that they are prepared to spend the rest of their lives as “square pegs in square holes” and “round pegs in round holes” (Waitt 1). This control is achieved in two ways: (1) oxygen deprevation; the less oxygen, the less intelligence and the less physically developed the person is, and (2) hypnopaedia, or sleep conditioning; phrases drilled over and over into the minds of the children as they sleep.
