The Relationship Between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth
Loving, close, distant and uncaring are all words that can describe the relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth at some point in the play, Macbeth. At first they seem like a perfect couple, and slowly as time goes on, their marriage deteriorates. Throughout the play, Macbeth's relationship with his wife changes until it is basically destroyed.
At the beginning the two seem completely devoted to each other. Macbeth's love for Lady Macbeth is very apparent in the letter he has written to her. Their closeness is also very clear when Macbeth refers to her as "my dearest partner of greatness" (I, 5, 7). Macbeth has a lot respect for his wife and her opinions as well. When they are discussing Duncan's murder, he takes her advice on how to act during the evening and shows her more affection by calling her, "My dearest love" (I, 5, 53). Macbeth is overwhelmed with guilt and regret over what he has done. Lady Macbeth is strong and takes control. She cleans him up, washes the blood off him, and returns the murder weapons to the crime scene herself. Lady Macbeth additionally covers for her husband when he acts suspicious and guilty of the crimes he has executed. First, she fainted after Duncan's body was found. Later during the banquet, after Macbeth had expressed his involvement in the murder of Banquo to Banquo's ghost in front of many powerful guests, Lady Macbeth orders everyone to leave and says that Macbeth is ill.
