Someone, I forget whom once said "...Courage is the greatest of all virtues because it guarantees all others."

No one's life more exemplifies this than the life of my friend John Proctor.

[Hand Gestures] This Church was where we would be free from the persecutions of our beliefs in Europe. My family and I came to this land, this New Haven with new hopes and dreams of a happy new life in a brave new world.

We arrived but ten short years ago with little more than the shirts on our backs, and bought the last tiny lot of land left in this one time paradise named Salem. To most we were outsiders, not welcome in this community until we met this man our neighbour John Proctor.

He arrived unannounced at our small makeshift house one Sunday, and extended an invitation to my family to join his family at church. He could obviously see that we had not the clothes or the acceptance of the community to enter these hallowed halls. He marched us down this very aisle [Hand Gestures], rags and all, and placed


From that day on, I had only the highest respect for John and for what he did to help my family. There was no way I could possibly have repaid him fully for such a tremendous deed. As time went on, I only became more and more convinced of how great a man John Proctor really was. One notable occasion was at the trial, when I first saw true pain in his eyes. John was on the stand desperately trying to achieve change to save the lives of his loved ones and the souls of the rest of the community, at great personal risk, and without success. Anyone that puts the lives of others before their own is acting with true courage. I know of no other person that would sacrifice their life as he did, at such a risk, knowing full well that the sacrifice that he was making might well be for nothing. [ANGRY] John Proctor was the victim of "mumbo jumbo, hocus pocus", a timely, veiled disguise of all that is unchristian. He did not succumb to the petty rivalries and the foolish innuendoes regarding his honesty and integrity.
