Language is a primary from of communication; it is also our most sophisticated. "We learn it's signs and conventions at an early age because it satisfies a lot of our basic human needs to be able to speak" - Dimbleby and Burton. "Speech is a code of signs ruled by conventions" in this case the signs are in the form of spoken word. Our spoken language, made up of sounds connected in a set order, allows us to express our feelings and emotions clearer than any other channel of communication as well as giving clues as to how feel within a specific situation and the status of the people we are with.
As speech is one of our most primary forms of communication it is a very useful tool, which we are able to adapt to the environment around us. This allows us to manipulate our language to create an image that we want others to see of ourselves, by doing this we are able to make certain aspects of our personality, or even traits that are not normally associated with us more prominent. This would depend on the tone in which we speak, our vocabulary, register, dialect and the non-verbal signs we use to back up this information.
Our surroundings also have an impact on the way in which we speak. If we are in an environment that we are not used to this will be reflected in our speech. It could come across as being slightly nervous. This is also in relation to relationships within the environment. An example of this is your working environment. At work although you may share a friendly relationship with your co-workers you are less likely to speak in the same way that you would to a similar friend at their one of your houses for example at a "girls night in". The subjects that you cover would be less personal and more general in relation to work or things that have happened to you over the week. This works the same with friends talking in the social area, although they may be more able and willing to talk about more personal subjects due to the amount of people around they tend to still speak in more general terms without giving away too many deep emotions. This is why people prefer not to have an argument with their friends at school as it is less likely to be resolved due to the surrounds and other people's ability to involve themselves. We see in this area it is the subjects that change as opposed to the register we use, the register can still however play a part in this area due to the relationships we share with those that we are talking to. Also if we are taking part in activities that restrict conversation due to proxemics or the need to leave people and return then conversations will tend to have a more general light hearted topic as people are less likely to get involved in a deep conversation that they can not continue. We still however must remember that this is not a rule and does not apply to everyone for these situations, some people do feel comfortable enough to discuss personal matters in these environments.
This model shows how certain aspect of how we interact can affect how people view us. The idea of making certain qualities more prominent can be seen in how we present ourselves to different people. Take for example a man at a job interview; he would go into the interview wanting to show the employer that you are hard working, responsible and reliable. The way he speaks will try to enforce these messages. He also may speak using different vocabulary to seem more i
