legalization of Marijuana

"Man made beer, God made marijuana, who do you trust?" That is a popular bumper sticker that you can see on many cars today, and it applies very well to the topic of legalization of marijuana. Marijuana should be legalized due to the facts that it has been proven to be a useful medication, it is less harmful than many current legal drugs, and the government is losing a lot of money over taxes concerning marijuana.

The first reason marijuana should be legalized has to do with its medicinal use, which is a very popular topic among the media. Lately the medicinal use of marijuana has gotten a lot of press due to several ballot measures trying to push legalization for medical use. Colorado was among the latest states to pass legislation for medicinal use of marijuana. Currently seven states have legalized marijuana for medical use and four more are seriously considering it (McMchon). However, even the states that have passed this legislation are having trouble. That is because all the amendments do make it legal for patients with a special registration card to possess a certain amount of marijuana (two ounces or six plants in Colorado). While not a single person has died from just smoking

If one person sat down and smoked enough marijuana to get him high, and another person sat down and had one cigarette, then the person smoking marijuana would get almost five times as much tar in their lungs. But what you have to remember is that the cigarette smoker might be smoking twenty or more cigarettes a day, so over time they accumulate much more tar. (Langston)

could I would have, I would have provided her with marijuana, I think it would have been worth it with the amount of pain she was in. (Moore)

So even while tobacco kills thousands of people every year, it is still in magazine ads and available at any corner store, while marijuana is forced underground and sold on the back market.

Information like this has helped with legalization, but while the wheels are turning, they are turning too slowly for some. Marcia Moore, an elementary school teacher living in Caņon City, Colorado, wishes marijuana had been available for medical use a long time ago. Moore's mother died of cancer almost fifteen years ago. Moore had this to say,
