Ethnography of Goldman sachs
A detailed Summary of Ethnography of Goldman sachs
For this project I chose to visit the Goldman Sachs office building in New York City because my cousin Beth began working as an analyst in investment banking for their corporation this year and because I may be interested in a similar job after college. Through my visit and interview with my cousin on November 21, 2001, I observed a strong emphasis on teamwork and establishing friendly relationships between coworkers. I also noticed that the manifestation of professionalism and power was possible without formality or intimidation.
The first thing I noticed when I walked into the building on Wall Street was that everything from the receptionist desks to the potted plants looked meticulously clean and impressive. It was immediately obvious that I had entered the building of a very professional, well-respected, and successful firm. My cousin, Beth, met me at the front entrance and led me to the elevator and up to her office, casually greeting about five coworkers along the way. The atmosphere was relaxed and informal, contrary to my original expectations.
I saw only a few people dressed in suits. At first, I assumed that this signified a higher status in the corp

In conclusion, the atmosphere of Goldman Sachs was surprisingly informal and open while successfully keeping its professionalism. Employees seemed to be very happy with their jobs and work environment (this may be a biased opinion because I only talked to Beth and her friends). They held their superiors in high esteem because of their accomplishments and insights instead of their power. The stressed value of teamwork contributed to the friendly and overall pleasant atmosphere of the workplace. As Beth put it, "We work hard together, play hard together, and somehow the projects get done."
oration, but Beth explained later that employees of all "ranks" dressed in the same manner and that suits and ties are only required when meetings are held with clients. Most women I saw were dressed in slacks and nice tops while the men wore mostly khaki pants and sweaters or collared shirts. Everyone seemed to be aware that their choice of clothing has an effect on how they are perceived by their colleagues and superiors. All but a very few people I saw were dressed in attractive and stylish, up-to-date fashions. The overall attire of the employees was very clean cut and professional looking while still remaining comfortable and informal. This seemed to add to the friendly and relaxed atmosphere in which I saw coworkers walking around freely and talking openly with one another.
