Korean War vs. Vietnam War

Korea and Vietnam had similar beginnings as far as revolutions are concerned. Korea had been occupied by Japan and Vietnam had been occupied by France. The United States and other U.N. nations put millions of dollars into both wars, but pretty much came out empty handed. At first it seemed as though America would win both wars but those opinions changed after years and years of fighting proved that not enough was being done to successfully rid Asian countries of communism.

At first Truman just had sea and air suppport but it soon turned inot a war with the U.S.'s total involvment. A similar situation took place in Vietnam. In the beginning the U.N. sent support to France but soon got actively involved in the war once the support was not enough anymore. Korea, just like Vietnam was split between a Northern Communist enemy and a Southern Republic ally of the U.S. In both events the U.S. government was forced into signing peace treaties because of the severe U.S. losses from fighting.

Both Vietnam and Korea were supported by China and the Soviet Union. By the beginning of the Korean War, China was already on its way to becoming a nuclear power. U.S. government officials faced problems with this. They needed to fight

the main enemy but at the same time avoid a fight with China. Both sided knew that a fight with China would have meant World WarIII with a nuclear weapons. Both sides preferred to avoid this but either side was willing to use nuclear weapons if they detected a threat from the other side.

During Vietnam the U.S. wanted to not only avoid fighting with China but also with the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union, who had stole nuclear technology from the U.S. during World WarII, was equally armed as the U.S. as far as nuclear weapons are concerned. In both cases of war, it was hard to fight on enemy and not fight the other taht was right behind him. The Chinese and Soviets took advantage of this in both situations. They would put their planes, tanks, and personnel in Korean and Vietnamese areas just to stop the U.S. from bombing them. This allowed the communist to basically decide where the U.S. was going to bomb and what they could bomb.

It seems as thought America became smarter about how to conquer communism after these two wars. The fall of the Soviet Union in the 1980s and the containment of it have proved this. Also American's have to realzie that it is not the amount of weapons
