Comparison journeys end . . .
The two texts "the naval sisters tale" and " the journeys end" are both written about scenes from the war but each one seems to do this in it's own unique way producing a completely different feeling for the reader in each tale. "The naval sisters tale" is a written transcript of a lady who was a nurse to the injured during the war, so we are receiving an eyewitness account of the war, somebody who has actually seen the horrors and she is portraying this to us in her own way "All Canadians yes . . . yes and . . . some of them very severely . . . damaged . . ." we get her views where as in "The journeys end" we are made to feel like we are there with the characters and we are the witnesses to what is going on, in order to make our own views. "The naval sisters tale" is obviously a text for a listening audience "In January 1940 I was m . . . I was called up and . . . but I" if this were intended for a reading audience the pauses and corrections in speech would not be present causing it to be more reader friendly. The transcript method of writing makes you feel like you are being spoken to (as the writing was originally intended) it is a more personal account of what went on and makes the reader feel like they
"STANHOPE: All right sir. Come down quickly!" "The journeys end" is capable of holding more imagery than "naval sister" like "pale evening sun" this gives an impression of even the sun being sick and tired just as the soldiers themselves, the sun is personified with the qualities the soldiers are holding at that time the imagery is used to describe to us the scene. In the "naval sisters tale" the speech is unplanned so the speaker does not have chance to get all of the imagery in, she is thinking of the account as it comes into her head. We occasionally get descriptions like We feel like we are there with the soldiers hearing the sounds and surveying the scene and the repetition here give the impression that the machine gun will not stop unlike the repetition in the "naval sister" is for the use of the speaker. She seems to be to make sure she is understood, not only by the listener but also by herself and to make herself clear. Aural imagery is used in "journeys end" to place us in the scene whereas in "naval sister" we are just hearing an account of the war not actually playing a part in it Out of the two texts "the journeys end" is overall the better-written piece, it provides the reader with a sense of atmosphere and places them into the scene and we feel we are there not just hearing the accounts of what is going on but also viewing it, but "the naval sister's tale" also has it's strong as it depicts the confusion, backtracking and the want for lost time back, but I feel would be more powerful in it's spoken form than written because I feel it looses the strength and impact that it would have given.
