It is distributed worldwide by organized crime and cannot be prescribed legally. It is most often found at raves, which are all night dance clubs. One hit of Ecstasy costs up to $30 and may last four to six hours. There has been an increasing use of ecstasy in the United States from 250 users in 1994 to 1,142 in 1998. Ecstasy has many psychological and physical effects. When it is taken it is absorbed into the bloodstream quickly. It is a stimulant in which alertness is increased like cocaine and amphetamine. It can cause confusion, depression, sleep problems, anxiety, paranoia during and sometimes weeks after taking the drug. It damages brain serotonin neurons, which play a role in regulating mood, memory, sleep, and appetite. This causes recurring memory problems and has mescaline-like psychedelic effects.
