The Big Change

A detailed Summary of The Big Change

It was a beautiful summer; I was out of high school and never had to go back. I had a full time job that paid a little above minimum wage, but enough to support my nightlife. In addition, I had many friends that made me happy and meant everything to me. In other words - life was a blast! There was only one problem in my life that bothered me, and that was my future. It was something that I never stressed over, except that now I was out of high school and maybe soon would have to support my own family. Therefore, after researching every possible easy way out, I realized that the only easy way for me to become successful was to go to college. Moreover, that was not at all easy since I was a 'D' average student in high school. But since my future was more important than anything, I went to the Bucks County Community College where I started out as an excellent student. Now that I was in college and my goal was to be successful, I tried to maintain good grades, which made me stress a lot. At the same time I tried to maintain the same type of relationship with my friends, but because my number one priority was school, our relationship was nothing like it was before. And as months went by, it was summer again and I w

I knew that I had depression because I was constantly sad. No matter what I did, or what someone did to cheer me up, it did not work. I lost potential for performing certain types of activities, which even included traveling. In addition, I lost appetite for food and had difficulty sleeping. I did not want to do anything anymore because my excitement for life was fading and all that I had on mind was hopelessness. I did not even want to go out into crowded places. Even if I did go out, I was dull, boring, and tedious. This behavior discouraged me even more and worst of all was that there was nothing I could do about it. Even my girlfriend complained that the person I was becoming was simply opposite of what I was before. Furthermore, after some time passed with my depression not getting any better, I became doing worse in school. I did not have the same encouragement or direction in life that I had before. The point came where I was not sure of my future anymore.

My life was changing very rapidly in my eyes and it was not going in a good direction. I began noticing that I could not share my personal problems with most of my friends, at least not like before. If before we would talk for hours on the phone, then now our conversation lasted no more than ten minutes. The people who I talked to did not sound like my friends any more. I felt like I was putting them to sleep when I talked about something because they often stayed quiet throughout the conversation. Yet, when I gave personal opinions about things that did not deal with me, these people began arguing with any type of opinion that I presented. One of my very good friends even suggested for me to change my academic major to the one he was taking because according to him, I was not smart enough for the major I already chose. He told me this after I said that the subjects that I am taking are new to me and are nothing like I had before.

The most important aspects in life were fading from me and only education could fix the job. I decided to take a course in psychology, called stress management, to help me come out of my depression and
