2 Gallants

A detailed Summary of 2 Gallants

Joyce begins to conceal the storyline in the initial naming of the story, "Two Gallants". Well-bred, honourable, dashing men usually fit the description of being a gallant. However, the gallants in this story are of very different qualities.

The two men are introduced to us coming down the hill of Rutland Square. Joyce hints further into the story by incorporating the term rut, a coarse word for copulating. The appearance of Lenehan is then described to us. He wore a yachting cap, which was seen as a badge of the working class. As a result, the gallant term already becomes questionable. Joyce then moves on to describe Lenehan as rough looking. Lenehan has a "wheezing laughter" and "convulsed body". His eyes twinkle with "cunning enjoyment". The "cunning" factor hints at sneakiness and shiftiness, which are qualities the "two gallants" demonstrate in the climax of the story. Lenehan is also revealed to be past both his physical and mental prime with "scant and grey" hair and a "ravaged look". This "ravaged look" shows an insight to a difficult life that Lenehan might have had.

His incapability to show the conduct of a gallant is shown when he "laughed noiselessly for fully half a minute" which shows a lack of reserv

A grim picture is shown as he consumed his "plate of peas" "greedily", finding it "so good", that he made a mental note of the shop. This shows the shear lack of excitement and lack of wealth, within Lenehan's life. Lenehan then thinks of Corley with his female companion and the "vision" causes him to "feel keenly his own poverty of purse and spirit." He then gathers his thoughts and decides all will be fine for him when he marries a "good simple-minded girl with a little of the ready". This is very optimistic of Lenehan, and suggests that he thinks of himself as a capable womaniser.

On his own, Lenehan's face "looked older". This shows us that he is generally more exuberant when in the presence of Corley, and hints at some form of link between the two men. As Lenehan has minimal money, he wonders what to do with his time and to his credit, temperance is shown as he enters the "Refreshment Bar" serving "ginger beer and ginger ale".

His "mind became active again" when he contemplates if Corley had "managed it successfully". Again, this hints that maybe he has a hidden self-interest at heart, rather than the happiness of his friend.

"There was others at her before me."

Joyce goes on to explain their adventure and through tedious, drawn out writing, which helps the reader experience the same peak of enjoyment reached as from their adventure.
