But what exactly does that mean - to be strong yet submissive? It is like saying that something is fun but boring. It really makes no sense. Once someone has strengthened his/her morale, it would be very difficult to go back to that submissive fashion. Strength creates confidence and confidence allows for free speech and action. Before the 20th century, there were too many preconceived ideas of people. Whether it is a black person, an Indian, or a woman, everyone had his/her stereotypes. What the Lowell factory did is abolish one of those stereotypes. It got rid of the notion of the submissive woman and gave rise to the reality of an independent lady. She may still have been just as righteous as before but now she had the ability to make her own decisions and be able back up those judgments with her own ideas. Surely it was a new time for humanity and the start of an irreversible era.
