Signor Leonato in Much Ado About Nothing Each character in Shakespeare's plays, whether he is a prominent figure or someone who is not even present, serves to add a significant meaning to the plot. Seeing this performance added incredibly to my understanding of the content of the play. I especially appreciated seeing the performance after reading first wedding scene, when Leonato is trying to understand the events that had just transpired. As I read the text, I could not believe how quickly it seemed that a father could turn his back on his daughter and question her decency. He seemed to be a selfish character; more concerned with protecting his own good name than understanding the pain that his daughter was feeling. When I watched this scene acted out however, I could see that I had read the words to myself and misinterpreted them. I think that when a person reads dialogue, if he is not familiar with the people (characters in this case), he will apply his own mood and meaning to his interpretation of the words. Once I could see Leonato's body posture and hear the intonations in his voice, it was easier to identify with
