There are only a few problems. The Alaska government wants ANWR open but the federal government doesn't want to open ANWR because it will disturb the natural habitat which really annoys the environmentalist. ANWR should be opened for drilling because it will create many new jobs. The environmentalists don't want the oil companies to disturb the natural habitat, but Prudhoe Bay has been operating for 17 years without any detectable environmental damages, and everyone would be able to gain economic wealth.

"Almost all elected officials in Alaska believe the US should open ANWR for drilling, because it would create thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in tax revenue."9

"Opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for responsible drilling is vital to the economic well-being of Alaska and the nation."23 "One respected economic consultant predicts that if oil exploration on the coastal plain of ANWR were successful, more than 735,000 American jobs would be created, and that the gross national product of the United States would increase by at least 50 billion dollars."24 ''There is no federal question that development of the rich oil and gas reserves on federal lands in the Arctic could provide billions of dollars in needed federal revenues, hundred of thousands of jobs nation wide and relief from the decline of production at Prudhoe Bay."25 "The oil industry says, its main concern is to reduce dependence on imported oil, which is dangerous. If America seriously wants to reduce dependence on imported oil, it should increase the fuel efficiency of cars and raise some revenue at the same time. For this to take place all the government has to do is slap on ten cents extra tax on a gallon of petrol every year for ten years."26 The oil industry doesn't know the actual amount of oil that is in ANWR but believe it is around 600 million barrels to as much as 9.2 billion barrels of oil. In ANWR the oil companies think there might be at least 10 billion barrels of oil. There is a good chance of finding oil in ANWR, maybe 10 billion barrels of oil. People say there is at least 3.4 million barrels of oil. "ANWR contains some of the last true remaining wilderness in the country that has oil under it."27 And Alaska wants to change that. Alaska wants to get in there and take that oil out.
