seeking our passion

A detailed Summary of seeking our passion

Sociology is the study of people in groups and their interactions. Each person has to find a role in society which gives them a purpose. Every society depends on its members to be productive. I have learned to question and dissect the inter workings of the society in which we live in today. Studying the way we act, and observing the way society views these interactions between groups and individuals has made me question my role in our society. The world consists of all different types of people, who Despite their differences, come together and coexist to form a society and serve a purpose which enables society to flourish.

Everyone has a purpose in society, but the way they go about fulfilling it is what separates the people into groups. If a person is not trying to better society, then they are looked upon as an outcast or a person who lacks intelligence. I have never viewed myself as an outcast until I did the explorement activity. For ten minutes, I did absolutely nothing but stand in the middle of the dinning hall with my hands by my side, observing everyone else's reaction to me. All my work is out there in the open...I can see it for the rest of my life. (xlix)"

There are three people who standout in my mind after reading this book; Roberta Victor, Mike Lefevre, and Carl Murray Bates. Roberta Victor has an interesting and rather scornful role in society, she is a hooker. The reason she filled her role so well was because she loved it. She honestly thought that she was doing nothing for the money, because she would fake it every time. Roberta says, "I'm not changed, I'm the same as I was twenty minutes ago, except that now I have fifty in my pocket.(59)" Roberta's passion was the easy money. She felt "absolutely marvelous(59)" about herself, which society demanded from her in order to continue her role. People will do almost anything for money; even manual labor, which almost transforms people into a human machine. This is where M
