Poe’s story “The Cask of Amontillado” is characterized by irony, and is filled with trickery, deception, and revenge to explain the psychology of the characters. The entire story is based on revenge and trickery. Not only does the main character want revenge, but he wants to enjoy it. The two characters in “The Cask of Amontillado” are Fortunato and Montresor. Fortunato is an eminently successful man. He enjoys the good things in life, is clever and has no scruples.
