Boadicia: Warrior Queen

Map of Celtic Britain and Northern Gaul

Map of Early Britain (Showing the Stages of the Roman Conquest)

In the first century B.C., the empire of Rome stretched from the Caspian Sea to the eastern coastline of Britain. They had the biggest army, the biggest empire and the most civilized culture. Their ambitions were great.

The Romans easily conquered Gaul (modern day France). Then the Island of Britain was on the border of the Roman empire, only a short boat ride away. After Julius Caesar had conquered Gaul, he invaded Britain in 55 and 54 B.C. But after winning a battle and getting a number of hostages, he took his army back to Rome. For the next hundred years there was no conflict between Rome and the Island of Britain, until after the Emperor Caligula was assass

Boadicea's supporters hid her body somewhere, but her grave is believed to be under Platform 8 of King's Cross Station in London. The commander of the Second Legion, Poenius Postumius, who had disobeyed a direct order from Suetonius and had deprived his men of a glorious victory, committed suicide by falling on his sword.

When the revolt began, the Celts never thought of taking prisoners, just killing the people that they fought. The only prisoners they took were for sacrifice to Andrasta, the goddess of victory. For their first battle, they went to the Roman colony of Camulodunum (present-day Colchester). The reason they chose Camulodunum was because the Romans there had been kicking people out of their homes and taking their land. At the time of the attack, the closest Roman legions were 120 miles away. Of the four Roman legions in Britain at that time, the Fourteenth and Twentieth were with General Suetonius on his Welsh campaign, the Ninth was at Lincoln and the Second was at Gloucester.

The Romans only lost four hundred men, even though the Celts lost almost eighty thousand people. To avoid capture, along with other things, Boadicea and her daughters took poison and ended their lives.

Suetonius went to Londinium (present-day London), a large, undefended town full of Romans and romanized Britons. He had ordered the Second Legion to meet him there, but their commander had not complied and therefore he had to leave Londinium because he did not have enough soldiers there to defend it. At that time Boadicea was marching south toward Londinium, so Suetonius went to join the Fourteenth and the Twentieth who were marching toward Londinium.
