It is up to the parents to decide what they will allow their children to watch on television. One way to do this effectively is monitoring what the children are allowed to watch. If the parent feels that a certain show is too violent for their children, they should have to power and control to tell their kids they are not allowed to watch the show. Paying attention to what is being watched in the household is a strong and very important step parents must take in order to prevent their children from being exposed to this negativity. Another way to prevent children from watching violence on television is allowing technology to aid parents. These days, many households have cable TV. It is possible to block out channels with certain ratings. For example, the a Shaw Cable digital Cable system, parents can block out channels that are rated too violent, contain course language or have scenes of sex or nudity. The children would have to input a password that parents have chosen in order to watch the program. Not being able to access the channel will send a message to the children and gives total control to the parents. Taking these steps is the first of many to ensure our children are not exposed to negative influences in our society such as violence on television.
