I felt my disdainful reaction at the time had the possibility of being inappropriate. After I discussed it with some of my friends, I got more reinforcement of that possibility, but the more I thought about it, the stronger I felt about the converse. What good did shame do, outside of the theoretical value of deterrence? Was it good to impart shame to an entire new generation of people as a deterrent or protective measure?

Why would I support equality? This was another question that was simply never asked within the current media. If one was a member of the ruling elite, what motivation would they have to push for equality, for equal access, or any of the aims of the ongoing movement? When I addressed this question earlier in my life, I wished to give a different answer than the stock, "everyone is equal". Nothing else in my life suggested that kind of response-not grades, not college choice, not competition, not friends or social life or even satisfaction. Why would this suddenly become a motivating factor for me in one isolated part of my life?

Shame is a personal value, one that people attempt to apply to others. No matter its rationalization, its focus is to inhibit action. I think that inhibition is appropriate, but that its direction should change. Shame should be a value in the information age that one applies to oneself. Be ashamed if you judge first. Heuristics are one thing; prejudices are another. Instead of using race or age or sex, now in a society being built upon avatars, people are making even more irrational, outlandish value-less judgments.

Honestly, it didn't. I had to take the difficult step of actually analyzing my life, and how it would change if people were all treated equally. I came to the conclusion that if everyone who is currently oppressed or repressed had those barriers removed, then society would function better as a whole, and I would benefit from that improvement in society. I found a selfish reason to promote a cause that didn't seem initially logical to my circumstances at first.

This understanding is what made the question of shame such a difficult one for me. People fell into the same category as I initially did-shame was accepted, even necessary. If it had underpinnings, I didn't have to worry about them, because everyone else had done the worrying for me. I have done the analysis, and I feel that shame is a value, but for different reasoning than that articulated in class or by my friends.

Start with the assumption that children can see anything they want. They can get information, and there are plenty of people, with differing motivations, that wish the children to get the information. Knowing that they're starting with everything, and the opportunity to really see it all, what do we want to do? What should we take away, if there was a chance that we could? What remnants of shame are important enough to occupy this type of activity?
