The benefits of helping the homeless far outweigh the costs. I think it is fair to say that homelessness is both caused by, and a result of drug and alcohol abuse. Once homeless, people turn to drugs and alcohol as an escape to their unthinkable situation. Or, by abusing drugs or alcohol the individual gets into the situation where they do not have enough money to pay their rent. The more pressing problem however, is the lack of adequate low-income housing. There are individuals and families that are working, and still cannot find housing that they can afford. This lack of adequate, low-income housing leads them down the road to homelessness. Social work advocacy is necessary in this situation in order to help people find and keep affordable housing. Once people are allowed to become homeless, the costs of their survival become public costs. It is much more cost effective to invest in keeping people from becoming homeless, than to support them once they are hom


eless. Once a person looses their home, they must depend on shelters and food kitchens in order to survive, which are very costly to the public. Instead of paying for these supports, we should simply assist the at risk individual or family with their rent for that month. During that time, they would be put in contact with a social worker in order to solve the problem. The solution may come in the form of job training, drug or alcohol treatment, getting section eight housing, or moving into a more affordable setting. These options are all less expensive than taking on the full responsibility of supporting the individual or family. The social benefits of keeping people in their homes would also be very great. Families would be able to stay together. Children could remain in school, and people could keep their jobs. These people would also be able to keep their pride and sense of self worth. This would reduce the amount of drug and alcohol abuse, and help to bre
