Civil Engineering
When I was a little boy my father bought me an erector set, I used to spend hours on end everyday building stuff from bridges to buildings. Ever since then I knew that I wanted to be a civil engineer and nothing else would do. Last year I enrolled at Michigan Technological University (MTU) and in four years I plan to graduate from Michigan Technological University with a civil engineering degree. After leaving my college life I will join the real world and start looking for a career. In the last three years Michigan Technological University has obtained a job placement for civil engineering that ranges from 85 to 100 percent. "Even with the recent economic rescission, we have had times when companies set up interviews and we have had no one even show up. They all already have great paying jobs lined up when they graduate," said Erica Denofre, head counselor for civil engineers at Michigan Tech. I feel very lucky with the degree that I have chosen to pursue; as Erica said before civil engineers are always in demand. This gives the option to choose where I want to work. Whither it be for the government or a private company. I can choose the field of construction, designing, managing, or even safety ins
I believe that right now is the best time to be in my field. New technology is being developed everyday and we are improving existing methods of doing things. I know that when it is time for me to graduate it will not be very difficult to obtain a job that I will enjoy and pays well. pection. However, I already know what I plan to do, I would like to work outdoors part of the year and indoors the remainder of the year. That's why I plan to work for the federal government or the state in the area of road and bridge design. The key to improving highways for the 21st century will be the use of new technology and the improving of existing technology. This means creating advanced or enhanced materials, improving inspection technology, design procedures, construction methods, operational practices, maintenance and rehabilitation technology, and management techniques. We must use technology that permits rapid repair and prompt reinstatement to service with minimal disruptions to safety and traffic flow. One recent technology that has started gaining popularity relates to pavement and waste products. This technology is the use of old computers and old tires. The process breaks up the old tires and old computers into small pieces which are then added with tar and other che
