My Mother

Last summer as I was looking through my family's chest of photo albums, I happened upon an interesting photograph. As I pulled out the last scrapbook and blew the dust away I noticed a picture forsaken at the bottom of the box, it was of my mother. This picture of her as a twenty-five-year-old woman and the story behind it has enthralled me from the moment I discovered it.

The young woman in the picture is how I vision myself in a few years. Her face is not quite as round as mine, but her vibrant, brown hair is of the same hue. For as long as I can recollect her hair has always been curled, but if it were not then it would be softy, wavy as my own. My mother's mouth is slightly open showing a row of perfectly straight teeth. She has the same prominent "smile lines" and the slightest hint of pink in her lips as I do. This photograph brings about various emotions, joy, pain, loss and love. To imagine my mother talking and laughing with her mom makes me smile because I know she would love that chance now. At the same time it makes me sad given that I know one day my mom will not be there for me. I do not want to think of that day, to lose so much in one brief moment, I would not know what to do. I do not suppose that I could handle such a feeling of loss. I also love my mom, and I would do anything to see her that happy again. This photo captures that one moment of love, beauty and happiness, and she has this still moment in time to remind her of all these feelings.

The story behind this picture is just as touching as the photograph itself. It was taken on my mom's last birthday to celebrate with her mother, November 5, 1983. This photo also captured the last time that my mom's whole family was together. I had been born
