In the #1 New York Times Bestseller "The Road Ahead", Bill Gates reveals to us his personal lamentations on the entire technology landscape. The entirety of the book is progressed in a barrage of in-depth examinations of technological advancements with some rare glimpse of Gate's personal life. The book takes on a journey reviewing the information age and computer industry, internet and content revolution, and education and home connectivity.

Gates talks about how information has become such a valuable commodity. Information was freely available and its value will not be challenged by inaccessibility. The only case that would pose a problem to it would be when information is wrong, in which case it may have a negative value. The reason information is getting to be so essential is because it's important to know how technology is altering the ways we handle information. He refers to the internet as a "precursor of the ultimate global network". With the emergence of the internet, he coins it as being a feat of enormous proportions, one that calls for dramatic evolution of hardware and software. Also creating the network requires the installation of expensive physical infrastructures like lines, switches, and servers. But now, the internet that is available to us is primarily narrowband as opposed to tomorrow's broadband interactive networks.

I feel that some may read this book for the chance to catch a glimpse of Bill Gate's life. Maybe we're to busy reading into the accomplishments and the technological developments that are evident throughout the book. It's fitting to ask the question: How does a man become by the name of Bill Gates, become such a success in life and become the owner of a software giant in the computer industry? Well, throughout the book, interludes into Gate's life provide us with different portrayals at different stages in his life. From his procrastination and gambling college days, hardships with the startup of a new fledgling company, and to marriage and fatherhood, his views on the industry progressed as his personal life progressed.

After having read this book, I feel that Gates has presented his viewpoints very well. Gates takes all of the technological advancements of today, and gives a convincing glimpse into the future. He does not stray too much from the capabilities of today's developments. Every assessment of the areas in the book is supported by a parallel narration of his life and career as well as the stages of development of Microsoft.
