Comparison of Values
Christopher Columbus, Bartolome De Las Casas, and Today's Society: Issues of morality have been implemented into society since the beginning of time. Human beings have been granted the gift of free will and should utilize it insistently and meticulously. Morality and ethics are essential in society to retain stability and keep anarchy from detonating. Christian explorer, Christopher Columbus was deficient in moral character when he departed for his voyage to the islands that were initially inhabited by Indians. Not all of Columbus' counterparts shared the same negative moral character as he did. Bartolome de Las Casas obtained a more solid ethical quality than what Columbus offered. Columbus and La Casas can be compared to the actions of the vile attacks on New York City on September 11, 2001 committed by a group of Arabic terrorists. September 11, 2001 marked the day of a devastating tragedy that perpetually changed our lives. In a catastrophic, full-scale terrorist attack on the United States, Arabic hijackers seized two American Airlines jetliners, crashed them into New York City's World Trade Center, and leveled both 110-story towers. According to her writings, Mary saw her brother-in-law fall, dead from wounds; her nephew, whose leg was broken, killed, and her sister shot. All around her was carnage. She was shot through her side and the child she carried in her arms was struck by the same bullet. There were 13 killed and 24 taken captive. ts and rescue workers attempting to salvage the lives of the many victims. Both of these events were intrusive acts conducted by others from a foreign land. Columbus and his Christian friends had no reverence for the Indian's life or their soil. Columbus states in his writings to Luis de Santangel that, " ... this land was nothing but an island," he continuously spoke negatively about the Indians and their property but persisted to partake of their lands' abundance. The Arabic The act of discrimination can be compared to the Indian's views of Christian people. The Indians thought that all Christians were like Columbus and his equals and they labeled all Christians to be negative. ethical beliefs, the Indians would have never had to experience such turmoil from Columbus and his comrades. While these terrorists shared the same culture and religious backgrounds, they did not share the same views when it came to harming individuals that were not what they considered their equal. Bartolome de Las Casas initially heard of Columbus voyage while he was a student in Seville, Spain. Casas went to Hispaniola as a member of a new royal governor's party to write about his moral blindness to the mistreatment of the Indians but he too became involved in the degeneracy of the Indians. He stated that he "went about his concerns like
