The novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, should be a part of the English curriculum for upperclassmen of all levels because the themes of love, desire and betrayal will always be relevant. This novel illuminates every aspect of a great American literature by incorporating these concepts. Upperclassmen can also appreciate and comprehend the intertwining themes throughout the novel which are still evident today.

The plot was set during the jazz era; a time of affluence for a select group of people. Jay Gatsby symbolized the "American dream" yet he pursued unattainable desires. All Jay Gatsby ever wanted was to be reunited with his first love Daisy. He thought by tempting her with a luxurious and rich life she would be persuaded to leave her husband Tom Buchanan and wed him. Gatsby broke away from what he was destined to be; a poor army boy. Instead, he inherited a large sum of money and built himself a large estate across the bay from his one true lov

The novel The Great Gatsby is truly a great book to read. It incorporates many themes which are relatable and evident to us today. Many upperclassmen can appreciate and understand the underlining themes. High school adolescents can defiantly relate to cheating and love rather in imagination or real life. Many upperclassmen will enjoy this novel and the morals that they can achieve from it.

The theme of betrayal is evident in both main characters but it does not seem to hurt or affect each other until they both realize their mistakes and should be together. Tom Buchanan was deceitful and spiteful towards his wife Daisy by constantly cheating on her.
