A common misconception is that dance teams are a club and not a sport. A club is defined as a group of people organized for a common purpose whereas a sport is defined as an active pastime or recreation. The definition of a sport is a much better definition for dance teams everywhere.
Some people that hold the opinion that dance team is a club include high schools and colleges across the United States. They feel that dance team is just something for fun and to watch at different sporting events. High schools and colleges feel that dance teams are inferior to other sports so they call them clubs. If you search for dance teams, they are recognized as a club instead of a competitive sport. Dancers work just as hard as any other athlete and if cheerleading can now be called a sport then there is nothing to stop dance
All of the elements of a sport are in a dance team. There is hard work, tryouts, and competition in a dance team. They work to win and have team unity like all other sports. By the definition of a sport and the examples and reasons given, dance teams across the United States should be called a sport and not a club.
Across the country dance teams compete on many levels including regional, state, and national competitions. These competitions earn members ribbons, medals, trophies, and the chance to have an all-star position. Competing in these events requires long hours of practice and dedication. Like many sports, dance teams practice hard and put themselves at risk for serious injury. Dancers practice many days a week for long periods at a time.
