Erskine Caldwell was born in 1903 in White Oak, Georgia. Caldwell was the son of a missionary who moved from church to church. He rarely lived longer than a year in one place. While moving from place to place, Erskine acquired a deep knowledge of the Southern sharecroppers. As a young man, Caldwell took odd jobs and worked in southern states. The places he traveled to were the Deep South, Mexico, and parts of Central America. At the age of seventeen, he enrolled at Erskine College in South Carolina for a short time. However, Mr. Caldwell quickly transferred to the University of Virginia on a scholarship. There he began to write short stories. Soon after this he attended the University of Pennsylvania, but he eventually moved to Maine. While living in Maine, in the 1920?s, Caldwell devoted his time to writing. He soon had three stories accepted for publication. These stories included two of his most famous works which are Tobacco Road and God?s Little Acre.
