Sleep Deprivation

Sleep is one of the most important things a person does each day. It allows the body to rest and to replenish itself so that it is better able to serve its purpose of living. Yet, many people who don't have enough hours in the day to do everything have to cut out sleep before any other activity. This is especially true for teenagers, who are trying to get good grades, do extra curricular activities, work, and have a social life. Those are the things that lead to teenage sleep loss; the effects of this loss are devastating.

School is one of the most important things of a young person's life, whether or not the teenager is willing to admit it. The teenager spends most of their time either in school or doing homework to further their education. The pressures of school are enormous. Stress is brought on with every project, experiment, and essay assigned to the student. They are forced to go through loads of work, trying to catch up to where they must be, all in order to receive good grades. On many occasions, these students will be up late studying, typing, reading, basically doing everything but sleeping. Sleep is put off so that more schoolwork can be fit into the day.

Falling asleep during the day is very dangerous. The student will experience difficulty if they fall asleep during a class. The teen will receive poor grades, and face the possibility of failure in school. Their school records will also be filled with detentions and other punishments that are assigned trying to discourage these small naps. Trouble also happens if they fall asleep while on the job, causing loss of wages, or even termination of employment.

The exhausted teen, however, is still a teenager. Seeing friends, dating, and talking on the phone are major parts of having a social life. While all of these are important to being a teen, they also take up a lot of time, causing them to have less time to sleep.

All aspects of a teenager's life, educational, extra curricular activities, business related, and a social life, cause lack of sleep. Lack of sleep can lead to problems in school and on the job, sickness, and possible even death. This need for sleep is caused by the continued pressure on them to be the best and do everything that they can in order to achieve success. This is dangerous, as it teaches them that sleep is unimportant as long as they are able to get a little more done during the day. Eventually the teenagers of today will be adults. Adults, who are in consent need of sleep, cannot run a society with much success.
