Advance Placement European History- Syllabus1. Important historical figures during the High Middle Ages. 1. Roger Bacon- Roger Bacon wrote Opius Maius, which said that experimental science was the only way to find an answer. Also he denounced the deductive reasoning of the time saying that inductive reasoning was the best way to find an answer 2. Thomas Aquinas- He was not a radical thinker during the High Middle Ages, in fact, he is a saint. Aquinas developed scholasticism, which linked fact to faith. The idea of scholasticism was published in his book the Summa Thelogical 3. John Wycliff- Wycliff was an English theologian and religious rebel. Because he was all the way in England the Roman Catholic Church could not kill him. 4. Jon Hus- Hus was a theologian and religious rebel in Bohemia (Check/Slovakia). He was close enough to Rome and the Papacy that could get him and he was burned on the stake. 5. Henry II of England- Henry II was the first English justice. He created a common law for his land and set up the first judicial system with judges and juries. But, the system was in favor of him. 6. 1. Henry VIII of England- He wrote In Defense of the Sacraments to gain brownie points with the pope. Seven years later he asked the pope to grant him a divorce form Catharine of Aragon, whose uncle is the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and he had special permission to marry her in the first place because he was his brothers widow. He couldn't get the divorce so he kicked the Catholic Church out and formed the Church of England. 2. Giovanni Boccaccio- a 15th century humanist who wrote the Decameron, which was a collection of stories which offered social critic on the High Middle Ages. Topics ranges from feudalism to the plague 2. John Wycliffe- He was in England and critized the church.
