Programmer

As baby-boomers begin to retire and the younger generation of citizens are required to fill up the job market, jobs must adapt to suit the interests of more a youthful workforce. Already, most new jobs now require some degree of computer literacy, as software like word-processing, email, web-browsing and business applications becomes a staple in our lives. It has become a large economical force creating this software in recent years, and the youth, who have embraced this new technology, are fully open to these positions. Computer programmers are so in demand, that there are not enough qualified workers to fill the open positions. They have certainly become a dominant force in industry.

Computer programmers write, test, and maintain the detailed instructions, called programs or software that computers must follow to perform their functions. This generally involves the typing of different commands and sequences in particular computer languages. Computer languages can have long and complex commands and operations,


When programmers are given an assignment it is usually in the form of a problem or algorithm. Then, naturally, programmers must be good problem-solvers. Computer programming also involves a fair amount of math knowledge. They must be good thinkers and not afraid to try new things. Programmers must also be persistent in solving problems and able to work for hours at a stretch. Finally, a good programmer manages his time well and meets deadlines, as in the words of Mr. Harkins "a program is never finished". As stated before, there is a great demand for computer programmers all over the world. Computer programmers held about 648,000 jobs in the United States in 1998. Employment of programmers is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2008. Programmers are employed in almost every industry, but the largest concentration is in the computer and data processing services industry, which includes firms that write and sell software.
