Gateshead, Lowood and Thornfield are three major settings in the book, each title has a significance to the understanding of Jane's life. The first major place in Jane's life is Gateswood, which can be described as a place of confinment, and a beginning point. If you look at the title itself, the word gate can symbolize something keeping her there or holding her back. Many of Jane's experiences that took place here resembled that of a prison rather than that of a close home. She made it through the tough times and onto the better times, that she had been looking for all along. Thornsfield was one of the saddest experiences that turned out to lead her to her dreams. The final place we are going to visit is Thornsfield, the title itself cannot be good. The thorns represent the hurt and pain Jane goes through at this point is her life, the field, however, can be a place of opportunities and wide, open spaces. Jane finally finds her love, Rochester, who turns out to have a wife, leaving him unobtainable to Jane. When she met Rochester she became happy and starting fantasizing about all the wonderful times they could have together, and just how great her life would finally be.
