Middle East Peace Process
The Middle East has long been home to a very deep-rooted conflict. The struggle for the control of Jerusalem between the Jews, Christians and Muslims has been going on for hundreds of years. After World War II with the establishment of Israel, the conflict grew even stronger. Israel is trying very hard to learn to get along with its Arab neighbors. One of the ways it has been attempting to reach this goal is the signings of peace agreements with the Palestine Liberation Organization [PLO]. Israel has been in conflict with the surrounding Arab countries over issues such as land, water and the future of millions of refugees (British Broadcasting Corporation). Right now, it seems as if the peace process has stopped being effective, and has instead turned damaging to the stability of the Middle East (BBC).?No issue in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is more emotional than Jerusalem? (Cable News Network). The big reason is because Judaism's holiest site and Islam's third-holiest site are located within the city (CNN). The west half of the city was under Jordanian control until the 1967 war, when it resulted in the city becoming a whole after Israel drove Jordan out of the West Bank (CNN). The Palestinians have alw
With the many issues that the Israeli-Palestinian has, the United Nations and the United States have done things that further resolve the conflict (CNN). There are many peace talks and negotiations between Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak (CNN). ?After the 1967 and 1973 wars between Israel and the Arabs, the United Nations passed two measures: Resolution 242 (November 22, 1967) and Resolution 338 (October 22, 1973)? (CNN). The resolutions called for Israel to take its troops from territories it had occupied during those wars, and in turn, the Arabs were to recognize the right of Israel to exist (CNN). By recognizing Israel's right to exist, the Palestinians hoped that the United States would lift its ban on talks with the Palestine Liberation Organization (CNN). In December 1988, the PLO renounced terrorism because the United States added another condition for lifting the ban (CNN). ?The Oslo accords are the foundation on which current peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians are based? (CNN). The accords were negotiated secretly by Israeli and Palestinian delegations in 1993 in Oslo, Norway, guided by Norwegian Foreign Minister Johan Jorgen Holst (CNN). They were signed at a Washington ceremony hosted by U.S. President Bill Clinton in 1993 (CNN). This was where Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin shook hands, ending decades as sworn enemies (CNN). The accords laid out the long-term goals to be achieved, this includes the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, and the Palestinians' right to self-rule in those territories (Center For Middle East Peace). In 1995, at another White House ceremony, Israelis and Palestinians signed another deal known as the ?Oslo 2? (CNN). The 400-page pact allowed for a second stage of self-rule for the Palestinians, giving them self-rule in the cities of Bethlehem, Jenin, Nablus, Qalq
