Animal Testing
If penicillin hadn't been tested on guinea pigs, it might never have reached the public. It is lethal to guinea pigs, deactivates the blood system of rabbits and is deadly to cats. Scientists are pushing for more experiments regardless of the cost to the animal's life. "One expense is the involvement of killing animals in the pursuit of a pine-scented air freshener"(Vergoth,p21). Animals suffering in experimentation labs are injust and cruel to animals. It is wrong to harm an innocent animal of any wrong doing, when the animal doesn't know right from wrong. It is argued that people have an obligation to animals, so that we can protect their welfare. Many animals experience pain, and sometimes death, during lab experiments. No animal experiments can be justified. Animal experiments have helped in some ways, such as the discovery of the polio vaccine.Vivisection can be defined as an invasive experiment performed on an animal for the purpose of scientific research, product testing or education ("The National. . ."). Vivisection is extremely wrong because it causes pain and suffering on animals. Animals are entitled to be free from acts of cruelty. Animals, however, are important in research because their body systems are almost i
The Draize Test is used to measure the harmfulness of chemicals found in household products and cosmetics, by observing the damage they cause to the eyes and skin of animals ("Product Testing"). Albino rabbits are used for the eye irritancy of a solution. The rabbits suffer extreme pain, mutilation and blindness. Often the rabbits' eyes are held open with metal clips. The damage to their eyes are irreparable and leave the eyes ulcerated and bleeding. At the end of the test, the animals are killed to see what the internal effects were ("Product Testing"). With the in vitro (test tube) technologies the scientists can do: chemical assay tests, tissue culture systems, cell and organ cultures, cloned human skin cell, human skin patches, mathematical models and human volunteers ("Products Testing"). With these types of alternatives, animals would not have to die for experiments. Also, without using animals for testing, it is less expensive and the data can be received faster. The testing is also more reliable. The only acceptable experiment is the one life-saving, and where widespread loss of human life is to be expected (Fox, p88). Even with testing that the animal goes through, a reliable prediction is impossible to ascertain. So
