Being required to endure a really crappy movie for even the sake of writing an essay can often be quite agonizing. With its lack of real-life friction, unbelievable characters, and unrealistic cliche feel-good scenes, "Remember The Titans" has more cheesiness than a Kraft factory. This is literally a "Walt Disney" version of a dramatic "true story" about the struggles of a small southern town forced to become racially integrated in 1971. It completely fails to accurately represent the genuine hardships of racism, and only leaves the question of how much concern went into conveying the actual truth?
Rarely do human beings confront each other to deal with emotionally charged racial tension without violence and swear words. Throughout the entire film there isn't one offensive word used, unless the word "ass" is considered to be offensive. What else could one expect from a "Walt Disney" production, a company known for its cartoons. I'm not saying that Good movies are made of swear words, it's just that when they're used in the appropriate context they compliment an actors character by making he or she more believable. Similarly, whenever two conflicting sides of any sensitive issue confront each other
Sadly, producers often fail miserably when they are more concerned with higher box office sales than with accentuating the ability of "true story" movies to include the audience in the experience. Effectively, allowing the average person to pay a couple of bucks to "be in someone else's shoes". This is embarrassingly evident throughout this film. For example, during a scene in which Denzel has decided to put the black and white teams through his "tough love" football training camp, the white team captain, a life-long racist, angrily tells Denzel that he refuses to play football with blacks. Denzel in one brief minute not only persuades this seething racist to welcome and appreciate the qualities of African-Americans, but also from this point on becomes a role model to his white teammates for the acceptance of people he's passionately hated his whole life. I realize that historically the south hasn't necessarily been celebrated for it's approval of African Americans, but are we to believe that people are this brainless? Equally astonishing is a scene in which after only being at the training camp together for one day, the black and white players have put aside their severely engrained racial beliefs and end up singing well-worn corny Motown tunes and cracking "yo mamma" jokes to one another in the locker room. All to often
