Rwanda
Rwanda is located in Central Africa, east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Rwanda was inhabited by two ancient African tribes; known as the Tutsi and Hutu. The European colonists, who thought the Tutsis were the nobles of the land, put them in power over Rwanda, even though they only made up about 15% of the population. Over time, the Hutu majority grew to resent this arrangement. Since 1990, Rwanda has been plagued by a violent ethnic conflict between Hutus and Tutsis, the nations 2 major ethnic groups. Rwanda was set in motion for one of the world’s most worst tragedies of the 90s.In 1994, the conflict had destroyed the lives of nearly 1 million Rwandans and created a massive refugee problem. RPF, also known as the Tutsi Army, were in search of those responsible for killings that had begun in April of 1994. The refugee situation was at its worst with thousands of people dying in camps. By fall, the situation was stabilized, but some camps had become bases for Hutu militia members, who began launching raids in Northwestern Rwanda.
