A detailed Summary of Do the Right Thing vs Black Ro

Do the Right Thing and Black Robe are two completely different films, yet they exhibit many of the same themes and conflicts. Do the Right Thing is set in modern times in one of the worst neighborhoods in all of Brooklyn. While Black Robe is set in the early 1600's in the wilderness of the Northern part of the United States. The main characters in each film face a lot of similar struggles, issues, and problems within the environment they live.

One of the significant parallels I noticed is between that of the two main characters: Sal and Father LaForgue. They are both minorities in the society which they live in. Sal, an Italian, owns a pizzeria in a predominantly black area of NYC, while Father LaForgue, a Frenchman, travels with the Indians. Sal knows he has to be careful about what is said within and around his restaurant. If the wrong thing were said, the whole neighborhood would have his ass, as it did at the end of the movie. LaForgue also cannot afford to say anything offensive to the Indians, because he is trying to convert the Indians. Throughout both movies, the main characters are just working towards a common goal. The conflict between different race relationships is yet another similar parallel. Chomina does not want Annuka to get with the Frenchmen because the Indians feel that he is dumb and ugly so he would not be able to support her. Mookie is the same way because he does not his sister talking to Sal because he feels that an old Italian is not right for his kid sister. The father and brother and both protective and want the best for them. Mookie and Chomina feel that they need to go out with someone of the same race and culture.

Sal and his pizzeria exemplify many of the same conflicts and situations as Father LaForgue and his converting Indians to Christians. These two films are so different, yet so similar. They are set in completely different times and in completely different ways of life. The characters in a story can attribute many of the same characteristics no matter what the story is about. I could have chosen any of the other movies to do in class, but for some reason I chose these two.

Mestigoit, the shaman, from Black Robe can be compared to some of the characters from Do the Right Thing. Mestigoit is well integrated within his people, but is looked at by LaForgue as a crazed witch doctor. He tries to put curses on LaForgue and LaForgue starts to find him annoying. He then just ignores Mestigoit, pushes him away, and splashes him with his paddle. I think that Mestigoit can be compared to Radio Raheem in Do the Right Thing. This guy carries around a boom box all day blaring "Fight the Power" by Public Enemy. The same song over and over again. He can also he compared to Smiley and Bug n Out. All of the black people throughout the neighborhood are kind to these guys because they are black and from the neighborhood. Similar to how everyone in Black Robe is nice to Mestigoit because he is a part of their tribe. At the end of Do the Right Thing, Sal smashes Radio Raheem's Boom Box, not caring where he was from or who he was because it was his pizzeria. Black Robe does not use as much force as Sal does, but the same type of conflict does occur.

Another significant parallel is the behavior of the main characters son or sons. LaForgue's son tends to be a little careless and obnoxious. Daniel, a Frenchman, falls for Annuka, which is Chomina's daughter not thinking of what the consequences would be. I am sure the Indians do not want her marrying a Frenchman. If Chomina woul
